This Handmade Afghan Abstract rug has all the features of a unique, finely knotted rug with a dense pile, made by Afghan craftsmen using vegetable-dyed wool. The exciting, thought-provoking design is influenced by 20th-century art and features soft terracotta and red and gold tones with a subtle hint of black set against a delightful blue-green background.

Some of the names of rugs refer to where they are made, the town, village or tribe. However, sometimes there will be a new product whose name bears no relation to where it is made, such as Afghan Loribaft, Choeb Rang, Kharjeen and Samarkand. The weave is similar to that of a fine Afghan Ziegler but with a geometric pattern, and the colourings are all very soft and muted.

After the carpets have been hand-knotted, the final process is to wash them with gallons of flowing water (literally thrown bucket by bucket). The rug is scrubbed with brushes with tough bristles enabling surplus dyes to be removed, making them much lighter in colour. The scrubbing also makes the carpet look slightly older or even, as some people describe it, an 'antique look'. The different Mordant used to wash and fix the dyes also affect the colouration of the original vegetable dyes.

The final carpets stage in Pakistan involves many processes. First, initial tensioning and alignment problems may be undertaken, followed by surface clipping, herbal washing and tumbling. This combination of Afghan weaving and finishing in Pakistan has succeeded.
