Qum is an important city in northern Iran, just south of Tehran (150 km) and east of the great salt lake, Dasht-e Kavir.

It is the second holiest city after Mashad and an important pilgrimage place for Shiite Muslims worldwide. It is a modern industrial city with over a million inhabitants and a petroleum product distribution centre.

Rug weaving began in Qum in the 1930s. The city is renowned for producing some of Iran's most delicate Persian rugs and carpets. These are high-quality, made with excellent materials, and solidly constructed. Knot density can range from 300,000 to 1,200,000 per square metre.

They can be made of wool on a cotton foundation or silk on silk. Sometimes, wool rugs have silk highlights. The patterns they use include the Boteh or Paisley design, the Bakhtiar garden design, hunting scenes or a central medallion. Skilled weavers can weave 8000 knots daily on a width of one metre or 8mm. A rug measuring 150 x 100cm with a fine quality of 1,200,00 per metre can take a year to make.

The company's provenance and the rug are worth considering when buying online. We are a family business with over 60 years of experience selling rugs. We have an unrivalled reputation and pride ourselves on our level of customer service. We welcome visits to the Tewkesbury shop; alternatively, we are pleased to assist with online enquiries by email or telephone.

It is worth remembering that these handmade rugs are unique and special; owning one is something you can enjoy for many years. I recommend buying a handmade rug with the best natural fibre, wool.
