For the last 20 years, the Afghan Ziegler rugs and carpets have generally been made in softer tones and different colours. However, things must move on and 'welcome to the modern Ziegler rug'. The design is similar, but the colours have changed somewhat, producing more lively tones.

Our Modern Ziegler collections are relatively new. Each handmade rug has many classic 'Ziegler' designs and motifs. They tend to have many bright colours compared to the traditional 'Ziegler' carpets. The brilliant ' jewel-like colour' is maintained primarily by reducing the amount of washing. The classic Zieglers are heavily washed to produce the appearance of 'age'.

The Ziegler carpet company was  Anglo-Swiss. They worked collaboratively with William Morris to take his designs into Iran (formerly Persia) and secure weavers in Tabriz and Sultanabad to produce fine examples of traditionally made carpets produced explicitly for Victorian Britain's export market. The processes were developed at the weaving stage, extending into finishing, particularly the herbal washes used. The fashion was to experiment at the time, and the early Ziegler designs were quite different from other traditional rugs and carpets of this period. The Oriental rug trade had not been used in this way before. In many ways, the pioneering techniques used by Ziegler & Co have been part of the inspiration behind some of the newly designed pieces from Afghan weavers' designs, like the Samarkand and Mamluks.
