It is wonderful to imagine that you could buy a rug that traditional nomads have created. This Qashqai piece is your chance to do exactly that! The wool pile is mid-length and soft feel, and the colours are typical of what you might expect from these weavers using natural dyes.

This carpet will have been made in Persia and the term Persian is still used for the rug trade. Thus, we would generally expect Kashgai rugs (Iranian term) to be made by the last genuinely nomadic people of the region. The Qashqai tribal confederation comprises five major tribes: the Dareshuri, Farsimadan, Sheshboluki, Amaleh, and Kashkuli. Though these versions differ, we believe that the arrival of the Qashqai Tribes in Iran coincided with the conquests of Genghis Khan in the thirteenth century. Twice a year, these nomadic people wander between the Zagros mountains and the Persian Gulf, constantly looking for new graze for their animals.

The Qashqai designs are not written or drawn but passed on to daughters who watch their mothers from an early age and gradually develop their skills in a family environment. It would be fair to say that the women will make these pieces with two or even three generations involved. The piece is knotted by the weavers who sit cross-legged upon the floor and, indeed, the carpet whilst they craft their art. Meanwhile, the men and boys will defend and protect the animals. The traditional lozenge-shaped ground with medallions in the centre repeated in the corners will often include many birds, animals, flowers, and trees they see around them. Occasionally, if you were very fortunate, you will come across one with the horse's head of Persepolis. As you would expect, these carpets are hand-knotted with wool that has largely been vegetable-dyed. The Kashgai pieces often have an interesting selvedge with bi or tricolour windings like a barber pole. The other distinctive characteristic is that the rug will be knotted on a wool foundation.
